Moscow Metro

First line opened May 1935 (red line), linking 13 stations from Park Kultury to Sokolniki. Open 05:30-01:00 daily. Cheap train rides, many stations like museums and galleries (mosaics, stained glass, statues etc.). One fixed fare per ride, under-7s free. For hours of fun, buy a ticket and ride – but avoid rush hour! Season tickets available.

Moscow River Taxi

Cruises between Kievsky Voksal and Novospassky Pier* (c.90 mins), stopping by the University, Gorky Park, Kremlin etc. Daily during summer, every 20 minutes from 11:00-21:00. Cost: 400 roubles adults, 190 roubles ages 6-12, under 6s free. Unlimited day pass: 800 roubles adults, 200 roubles children. Ticket kiosks at docks, no advance sales. Small on-board cafe, toilets. Seating indoors and outdoors. Also from Kolomenskoye to Brateyevo, night cruises etc. Party and group bookings from 5,600 roubles per hour (minimum two hours).
*The Novospassky Monastery is a short walk via a large pond from this last stop, tracing its foundation to the 12th century and, more recently, used as a Bolshevik concentration camp, an orphange, an NKVD archive and a furniture factory. The entrance is through a four-tiered bell tower. You must be suitably dressed (i.e. headscarves for women, long skirts/trousers). Relics include a piece of the Virgin's robe. The river taxi also stops by the Novodevichy Convent (see "Parks").

Excellent alternative for getting from A to B above ground, adding to that special ‘day out’ feeling. For ease, buy a map marking all the routes and buy tickets from the kiosks near the bus stations (single, 2, 5, 10 and 20 trip tickets available), otherwise you can buy them on board if you have exact change.
