Kuskovo neglected, looted by French in 1812, nationalised by Bolsheviks in 1919. Many offer small children’s play areas and, during the summer, temporary kiosks and cafe areas. For example: Aquarium Garden, Bolshaya Sadovaya/Patriarshy Prudi – small park and fountains by Starlite Diner, shaded playground at Patriarshy Ponds. Chisty Prudi – tree-lined park with pond (seasonal boating/ice skating, ‘floating’ restaurant on pond) and fountains. Miusskaya Ploschad – park with play area off 1-Tverskaya-Yamskaya Ulitsa (M. Belorusskaya). Ostozhenka Ulitsa/Zachatevsky Pereulok – small, enclosed playground and basketball court, quiet location next to 17th century monastery. Starokoniu Shennie Pereulok - popular children's playground area for those living in the Stary Arbat area. Strasnoi Bulvar - newly renovated children's playground area and park along Boulevard Ring. Trubnaya Ulitsa/Pechatnikov Pereulok – playground, basketball court (good for tricycles) and football pitch in school grounds (open to public weekends). No road signs; if driving, take Varshavskoye Shosse until the Podolsky turn-off, then keep going straight after crossing the railroad in Scherbinka. Owned by the Vyazemsky family, and named the ‘Russian Parnassus’ after Pushkin, who enjoyed walking along the lime-tree avenues. There is also a monument dedicated to Karamzin, who worked on his history of Russia whilst staying at the estate. The palace is currently being renovated, but the grounds are open for walks through the woods and by the large pond. Cafe. Entrance: 20 roubles. Admission fees (approx. 100 roubles weekdays to 500 roubles weekends; children free) and hire fees/deposits apply. Most are also open for night skating; some offer ice discos and other entertainment. Local areas, such as Chisty Prudi, offer free skating on their ponds without additional facilities (check the rest of the entries on this page and the local press for other skating and skiing locations). Tatiana Rudakova, an internationally qualified ski instructor (beginners and advanced; adults and children), can be contacted in advance for those wanting skiing lessons in Sorochany. Large children’s play area with trampoline, climbing frames etc. (100 roubles per hour). Small enclosed children’s swimming area with slide. Sun-bed with mattress and towel: 500 roubles per day. Rental available (boats, jetskis). Volleyball, billiards etc. Car entrance to Serebryanny Bor: 100 roubles. Parking and trolley bus stop outside park entrance. Ice sliding and ice skating in winter.
